Group Format

Structure

All groups will focus directly on a specific topic and skill to be discussed in group and practiced outside of the group. This group will also have routine assignments that will be emailed to the group in between meetings. All group members are expected to read content and complete assignments.

Participation

Group members are encouraged to participate. Joining in on group discussion, engaging in practices in and out of the meetings, as well as being present in the meetings are the only way a group like this can be helpful.

Attendance

We start group on time, If you are not able to make it to group by then, you will not be allowed in group and charged the missed group fee. Missing a session does occur, but if too many sessions are missed, you will be asked to start the group again at a later date.

Mindfulness

In this module…

  • You will learn how to become more aware of thoughts, feelings and physical sensations

  • Practice expanding curiosity and interest to new as well as familiar experiences

  • Learn how to practice self-compassion

  • Develop deeper understanding and awareness of your surroundings and relationships

Mindfulness skills will help you focus on one thing at a time in the present moment, and by doing this you can learn to better control and soothe your overwhelming emotions. In this module, you will learn to identify and separate judgmental thoughts from your experiences. These judgmental thoughts often fuel emotional reactivity. Practicing mindfulness also teaches how to become more aware of our own reactions as well as the environment around us so that we can make better informed decisions on what to say and how to act.

Distress Tolerance

In this module…

  • You will learn how to practice Radical Acceptance

  • Develop the ability to perceive one’s environment without putting demands on it to be different

  • Learn to experience your current emotional state without attempting to change it

  • Learn to observe your own thoughts and action patterns without attempting to stop or control them.

Distress Tolerance skills are used to help us cope and survive during a crisis. This module helps to teach tolerance of short term or long term pain (physical or emotional pain). Distress Tolerance skills are to help individuals get through situations in life when they can’t make changes for the better, and for any number of reasons, they can’t sort out their feelings well enough to make changes in how they feel.

Distress tolerance skills address the tendency of some individuals to experience negative emotions as overwhelming and unbearable. People with a low tolerance for distress can become overwhelmed at relatively mild levels of stress, and may react with negative behaviors. In the distress tolerance module of DBT, participants learn that there will be times when pain is unavoidable and the best course is to learn to accept and tolerate distress.

Emotion Regulation

In this module…

  • You will learn to identify and increase awareness of your emotions

  • Learn to reduce emotional vulnerability

  • Decrease emotional suffering through learning new coping skills

  • Learn to increase Positive Emotional Experiences

Emotion Regulation is the module in which we learn to understand how our emotions work. In this module, participants learn how to manage negative and overwhelming emotions, reduce vulnerability to negative emotions by learning ways to increase positive emotional experiences.

An important aspect of emotion regulation is understanding that negative emotions are not bad, or something that must be avoided. DBT takes the approach that all emotional experiences are valid and need attention. Skills in this module focus on learning how to bring awareness to emotional experiences in an effort to allow individuals to quiet their minds, choose supportive behaviors and to live in a way that improves self-respect.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

In this module…

  • You will learn to identify your needs and communicate them effectively to others

  • Learn assertive communication techniques

  • Practice making requests and refusals to those in your life

  • Experience how to be effective in any type of social or relational dynamic

Interpersonal effectiveness skills are extremely important because the way we communicate with others has a significant impact on the quality of our relationships and on the outcome of our interactions. Learning to get along with others while also asserting your own needs is essential to healthy relationships. It can be difficult to balance your own needs and the needs of others.

In order to communicate more effectively, DBT group participants are taught skills that help them approach conversations in a more thoughtful and deliberate manner rather than acting and reacting impulsively due to stress or intense emotions. Two key components of interpersonal effectiveness are the ability to make requests to others and to say no to requests, when appropriate.
